This theme tackles the issue of change and aims to equip children with an
understanding of different types of change, positive and negative, and
common human responses to it. The theme seeks to develop children’s ability to understand and manage the feelings associated with change. It aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: motivation, social skills and managing
feelings.

The overview contains scripted and interactive assemblies, as well as learning outcomes from nursery-Y6.

This theme focuses on developing children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: empathy, managing feelings (with a focus on anger) and social skills. Each colour-coded set is organised around developing the ethos of the classroom – extending the work of Theme 1 New beginnings on cooperation and valuing diversity, and focusing on four key content areas:

  • developing the social skills of friendship
  • working well together in a group
  • managing anger
  • resolving conflict.

The overview contains scripted and interactive assemblies, as well as learning outcomes from nursery-Y6.

These documents suggest activities for working with small groups of secondary school pupils (perhaps with additional needs in the areas described). They contain guidance and activities for running small group sessions (similar to the 'silver set' in primary SEAL) in the following areas:

- Becoming independent
- Conflict resolution
- developing positive relationships
- Managing change
- Managing strong feelings
- problem solving
- understanding myself
- working together

This Silver set provides an early intervention for children who need additional support in developing their social, emotional and behavioural skills. It is aimed at children in Years 1 and 2 and links to the Blue set. The ideas in the materials could also be adapted, however, to provide group work for children in Year 3 and in the Foundation Stage.

This theme focuses on developing children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in four key social and emotional aspects of learning: empathy, self-awareness, social skills and motivation.

The theme offers children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals within a community, and to contribute to shaping a welcoming, safe and fair learning community for all. Throughout the theme, children explore feelings of happiness and excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning (and putting into practice) shared models for ‘calming down’ and ‘problem solving’.

The overview contains scripted and interactive assemblies, as well as learning outcomes from nursery-Y6.

This resource provides plans for small group work at KS2 (published on the web following the printing of the original SEAL materials),

It offers an excellent overview of how to set up group-work, ideas for starter activities, handouts etc. relevant to the following primary SEAL themes:

New Beginnings
Getting on and falling out
Going for Goals
Good to be me

These assemblies were created following the printing/publication of the Theme booklets for primary SEAL. They offer further interactive, scripted assemblies for use in primary schools, linked to each theme.

Secondary SEAL Y7 Introductory theme: A place to learn (resource sheets)

Note that the learning activities that accompany these resource sheets are within a separate booklet to this one, entitled 'A place to learn'.

Note also that although this theme booklet is entitled 'theme 1' on the cover, it is actually the introductory, transition theme, subsequently renamed the introductory them. Not at all confusing.

Secondary SEAL Y7 Theme 2:Keep on learning (learning opportunities)

Note that the handouts and other resources are within a separate booklet, entitled 'Keep on learning (resource sheets)'.

Note also that although this theme booklet is entitled 'theme 3' on the cover, it is actually the theme that equates to Theme 2: keep on learning for Y8 and 9.

This theme aims to develop and revisit four of the key social and emotional aspects of learning covered in previous themes, through a focus on bullying – what it is; how it feels; why people bully; how we can prevent and respond to it; and how children can use their social, emotional and behavioural skills to tackle this crucial
problem. The four aspects of learning in which knowledge, skills and understanding are developed are self-awareness, empathy, managing feelings and social skills.

The overview contains scripted and interactive assemblies, as well as learning outcomes from nursery-Y6.

This theme focuses primarily on the key aspect of motivation, with a subsidiary focus on self-awareness. It gives an important opportunity for all children’s abilities, qualities and strengths to be valued.

This theme is the first of two focusing specifically on feelings. It explores feelings in the context of the child as an individual, developing self-awareness and helping the child to realise that it really is ‘Good to be me'. The theme is about understanding our feelings as well as considering our strengths and weaknesses as learners. It aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy.
