Secondary SEAL Y7 Theme 2:Keep on learning (resource sheets) Note that the learning opportunities (activities) for this theme are within a separate booklet, entitled 'Keep on learning (learning opportunities)'. Note also that although this theme booklet is entitled 'theme 3' on the cover, it is actually the theme that equates to Theme 2: keep on learning for Y8 and 9.

The theme offers children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals within a community, and to contribute to shaping a welcoming, safe and fair learning community for all. Throughout the theme children explore feelings of happiness, excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning (and putting into practice) shared models for ‘calming down’ and ‘problem solving’.

This Silver set provides an early intervention for children who need additional support in developing their social, emotional and behavioural skills. It is aimed at children in Years 1 and 2 and links to the Blue set. The ideas in the materials could also be adapted, however, to provide group work for children in Year 3 and in the Foundation Stage.

  • developing the social skills of friendship
  • working well together in a group
  • managing anger
  • resolving conflict.

This theme is the second of two focusing specifically on feelings. It explores feelings within the context of our important relationships including family and friends. The theme aims to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in three key social and emotional aspects of
learning: self-awareness, managing feelings and empathy. In addition, there is a focus throughout the theme on helping children understand the
feelings associated with an experience that we all need to cope with at some time: that of loss – whether of a favourite possession, a friend, a family home, or a loved one.
