This report makes links between promoting and supporting positive behaviour in primary schools through the development of SEAL. It was published in 2009, Ref: 00153-2009FLY-EN.

This report was produced in 2010, evaluating the impact of secondary SEAL in a number of schools - regardless of how fully they had implemented the suggested guidelines (e.g. of taking a whole school approach). It is critical of SEAL, and concludes that SEAL does not impact on the key areas explored.

See also Robin Banerjee's report (on the site), published in the same year, for an alternative evaluation (Banerjee tracked a number of primary and secondary schools who had implemented SEAL fully, in the way set out in the guidance).

Throughout the theme children explore feelings of happiness and excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning (and putting into practice) shared models for ‘calming down’ and ‘problem solving’.

The Saying no to bullying theme is structured differently from the other themes. It is intended that the work takes place over the period of a week or so, and that work in each subject area is focused on the aims of the theme as well as on subject-related objectives. Many schools have chosen to use the theme-related work to coincide with the national antibullying week in November.

problem. The four aspects of learning in which knowledge, skills and understanding are developed are self-awareness, empathy, managing feelings and social skills.
