Schools in England are required to actively promote fundamental British values to their pupils, both in lessons and in extracurricular activities. The values are defined as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Under the Prevent Duty, schools must also actively protect children from the dangers of extremism.

SEAL Evidence Review

03/10/2012 by Julie Casey

The review begins with an evaluation of whether the model of emotional intelligence (EI) proposed by Goleman (1996), on which the SEAL programme is based constitutes a valid and useful construct for educationalists.

Concluding, on the basis of the take-up of the SEAL programme in schools that it does, it then evaluates the evidence as to whether social and emotional skills are correlated with attainment, and asks whether such skills can be successfully taught.
