A resource collection on confidence

We’re sure many of you will have been helping children think about the new qualities, skills and interests they acquired because of the lockdowns and school closures. So much more important than talking about lost learning and catching up….

So on this theme we’ve put together a collection of new resources focusing on confidence.

For primary we have

Are you a lemming?

Sort of linked to confidence is this lesson sequence plan and PowerPoint, suitable for Y7 to 9, about peer conformity and peer influence.  We at The SEAL Community put it together during the COVID lockdown when teaching a group of Y7s on Zoom. We often tell children not to succumb to peer pressure but in these lessons we wanted them instead to think for themselves about the pros and cons of conformity.

Understanding, tracking and dealing with feelings

We are finding that because of the post-lockdown focus on mental health, more and more schools are interested in ideas like emotion check-ins, the zones of regulation and helping children manage strong feelings. The SEAL Community website has a huge bank of resources (just use the search function for zones of regulation, check-ins, managing feelings). But we have put together some new ones this term:

Did you know that on average, 1 in every 29 children will be bereaved of a parent, and many more children will experience the death of another family member or friend?

My two grandsons’ mother died when they were five, so it really matters to me that education helps children cope with bereavement and support other children who may have been bereaved.

Mentally Healthy Schools – Over 100 new resources for secondary schools

The Anna Freud Centre’s Mentally Health Schools has expanded to provide an information and resource hub with free, high quality mental health resources and guidance for secondary schools and further education colleges. This follows the success of its primary school resources, which have been accessed over 1 million times. since its launch in March 2018. The resource hub can be filtered according to age and theme, and includes over 100 resources specifically for students aged 11-19, linked to the UK curricula.

New KS1 resources

The Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues has published a new programme of study, 'Read Grow Go', developed for pupils aged 5-7. The programme contains eight lessons, each of which uses a story as a stimulus to teach a different character virtue, focussing on honesty, compassion, service, community awareness, teamwork, perseverance, curiosity and independence. The lesson packs provide teachers with lesson plans, slides and pupil activities which promote class discussion and individual reflection on each of the eight virtues in turn.

Be Internet Citizens’ resource for KS3-4

This resource is a unit of five free lessons produced through a collaboration between Google, YouTube and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD). They aim to developing critical thinking and media literacy skills, while building their empathy towards other internet users.

Measuring pupils’ wellbeing in your school

The CORC organisation In collaboration with the Evidence Based Practice Unit, are offering a free Wellbeing Measurement for Schools, a comprehensive approach that allows schools to understand areas of strength and challenge for their pupils and staff. The approach is suitable for primary and secondary schools, with age-appropriate surveys for children from Year 4 to Year 11 as well as a staff survey. 

Measuring staff wellbeing in your school

The Anna Freud Centre have published a free resource for schools and Further Education settings to help them carry out staff wellbeing surveys. It provides sets of questions to help settings better understand their staff, the school culture and what drives good or poor mental health in order to provide the support that is needed. It can be accessed here.
