Lessons in empathy

These resources help children develop empathy. For primary schools there is a link to a Sesame Street film illustrating what empathy means, a lovely lesson called Empathy in a shoe box, and a Pass the Face circle activity to help children read social cues. There's an Empathy prints cut-out for literacy or history ( contributed to TES website by Temperance - thank you): students explore how a character might be feeling by imagining they are in their shoes and fill in the shoe outlines.

Relationships theme planning

Here you'll find examples of teachers' planning for the Relationship theme, by year group. First there's some Reception medium term planning for relationships , uploaded to TES site by C Fention- thank you! It would just need updating for current EYFS. Then there's a medium term plan for a mixed Y1/2 class developed using the Jenny Mosley Circle Time for SEAL book and adapting the national DfES materials accordingly. Learning outcomes are from the DfES materials but the activity cycle is from Jenny Mosley materials. It was uploaded to the TES site by littlemiss.

Embarrassed? Teaching resources about the feeling

Here we have a fun Sesame Street film helping children understand what embarrassed means, and some lesson plans. These cover six short  lessons, with a Powerpoint for each lesson and worksheets – these are on the last six slides. This really useful whiteboard resource is based on the national SEAL materials with some lovely extra twists. It was uploaded to the TES website by Barry P. from Westfield Primary in Wigan- thank you, Barry!

Love and loss

Here we have a lovely primary assembly or lesson about love and loss, based on the book ‘The Heart and the Bottle’ . It comes from the TES website and was created by jdelaney for the SEAL ‘Relationships’ theme. There is an assembly outline and a slide show of key words in the theme. Plus we have  a primary drama lesson based on the thought-provoking story The Saddest King , created by Natalie Smith of Uplands Primary school,  and a KS2 lesson plan to help children understand death. For secondary there is a PowerPoint lesson about bereavement and how it should be handled.

My grandchildren lost their mother- please use our resources on bereavement and loss

I'm posting these resources for a very personal reason. My twin grandchildren lost their mother to cancer when they were five. They were in their first year at school. Every year issues crop up - this year around mothers' day. So this is a plea for all of you to include work on bereavement and loss in your everyday SEAL/PSHE work, even though it feels difficult.

Understanding loss and death

There is a very sensitive ‘Death and new life’ assembly or lesson. Uploaded by Ian Forsyth , it draws on his own experience of losing his grandmother and invites children to think about their own losses and make a class memory basket. This resource will help children understand the feelings they may experience and understand that loss and sadness are part of living.
